Slayyyter is a 29 year old pop artist from St. Louis Missouri. She has three albums out, and is currently releasing singles for her fourth studio album. This song, "My Body" is from her third studio album Starf*cker. I adore every song from this album and the three deluxe tracks that came out later. (Parataxis in italics).
This song is very special to me. Not only do I absolutely love the production on it, its a very dance-pop heavy track, but the lyrics are bittersweet, think similar to Robyn's "Dancing On My Own". The song opens up with her whispering "Don't leave me" and the music starts immediately after. It goes right into pop-perfection, while the lyrics speak about desperation and desire for someone.
The refrain after the first verse is where the themes of desperation really shine: "I need your love / I need you closer / It's not enough... / Look in my eyes / Hope you're not leavin' / No, not tonight" The music is cheery and heavy on the bass. After these lyrics, the music slightly dies down and goes muted while she sings more about how she can't be alone and how she's miserable.
The chorus comes in immediately after. She almost begs them to stay. They need to go; she knows this. She wants them to stay for her. She needs them there to "touch her body".
I really love the difference in lyrics from the music itself. The production is very up-beat, and if this were playing in a club I don't think many people would care about the lyrics, compared to the beat. It's a very good pop song, but the lyrics are surprisingly desperate. Its just her begging this person to stay because she doesn't want to be alone. It's very raw, and when I first listened to it, I was surprised at just how raw it was. I've been a fan of her since like 2018, when she released her first single "BFF" with Ayesha Erotica.
I really wanted to highlight the difference in lyrics vs music, because I find songs that have emotional lyrics despite being a very upbeat song is very fun to listen to. I also love that she's from my hometown. I've seen her twice in concert now and it's been amazing.
Her third studio album Starf*cker is genuinely her best work of music so far, but with the singles she's been putting out lately, this next album is gonna be so good.
