This song is kinda sad, which is probably why I love it so much.
The entire song plays on the idea of not knowing yourself, and someone knows you more than you do.
Looking back over the lyrics I think this is probably about a long-term relationship and how they know each other very well and how to calm each other down, but when I first listened to this, and when I still do, I don't take it like that at all.
I take more of like this couple, whether it be long-term or not, where one (the singer) has essentially dumped all of their life history onto this other person and treats them like they are better than them. I think it probably stems from my relationship issues, and when I found this song I was going through something at the time.
I think what led me to believe that this wasn't only about a long-term relationship was this line "Scared to tell you that I don't want you to leave / 'Cause I know you could" Something about it makes me hard to think about this being about a long term relationship. I feel like the simple act of telling someone you love that you don't want them to go because they might actually leave you would not be a major deal in a long-term relationship. I feel like in a shorter relationship this might be overwhelming for the person on the other end.
I also think this idea of not knowing who you are unless you're with someone could be very reminiscent of BPD, and the struggles that people with BPD have with relationships.
